Self-Care Awareness – Girlfriends4life Network, Inc.

Self-care is a concept that I believe most women have struggles with. From the time we’re little girls it’s instilled in us to take care of others. Often times as gifts, we would receive items such as kitchen sets, life like baby dolls that cry and wet themselves… and we take care of them for “fun” *insert side eye*.

We’ve been conditioned to care for others so much so that we often times ignore ourselves and in most cases we hadn’t yet been taught how to take care of ourselves.

We pride ourselves in how much we take care of others, that just the mere idea of taking a simple break in our minds seems selfish. In reality it’s the best thing you can do for yourself.

Taking a few hours or even a weekend off to just reset doesn’t mean you love your family, friends or work any less. It simply means that you also love yourself and you recognize that self-care is essential to your life and health. We should not ever put yourself in a situation that can possibly result in overwhelm.

At the end of the day, you are just one person. Just because you may be capable of taking on a lot it doesn’t mean you should…especially when it comes to caring for those who are fully capable of doing for themselves.

I also believe that it’s important for everyone to implement some sort of self-care into their daily routine. Whether it be taking a morning walk, meditating, enjoying your favorite movie alone or anything that will put your mind at ease. Adding a few of these simple suggestions on a regular basis can make a huge difference in your life. It can add peace and balance to your life and also keep you from going over the edge.

Being 100% accessible to everyone all day can drive anyone up the wall. If we all think about when we were growing up…most of us, if not, cannot think of one time when we saw our Mothers take time for just themselves. If they went on vacation, it was either with family or their mate or husband…but alone? Never!

Although you may have witnessed our Mother’s or Guardians choosing to take more time for others than themselves it doesn’t mean you have to. If you are still that Mother, you don’t have to continue. Take the time you need for YOU and watch how much better you feel over time.

We can all attest to the fact that for women…putting others first may not stop anytime soon but we can start a new cycle now.

My hope for women is that future generations, will take better care of themselves first in order to be better equipped for life, relationships and more importantly themselves.  So, go ahead and put your phone on “Do Not Disturb”, book a nice hotel and just relax. Your mind will thank you for it!
